ReReview: The Beta Band - 3 EPs (1998)

This album is arguably one my favorite albums of all time. A lot of my other ones are well known standard “great” albums of our era, but this album, at least for me, carries a strange obscurity and mystique about it that allows it to transcend the spirit of a moment, and move into a timeless flowing continuum of awesome.

I’m not going to detail stuff about bands in my reviews, or talk about any of the pre-existing opinions of older work. To be honest, I know just vague details conerning The Beta Band and while I am absolutely positive they are a great and illustrious band, I also believe that the reason this album is so powerful to me is because I don’t have any context for it, and I still love the hell out of it. I have no story to wrap around it. It is its own story and it holds its own that way.

I first heard “Dry The Rain” in High Fidelity, which, being 23 years old, I actually didn’t get around to seeing or appreciating until around 2004 or 2005. The scene in which it is played is pretty much a shameless dig for the album, but it’s also a beautiful re-creation of what it feels like to hear a great song for the first time. This is a feeling I have every time I listen to the 3 EPs. The amazing layering of unconventional sounds, breakbeats, and folk harmonies recombine in a new way with each listen.

Favorite Tracks:

“Dry The Rain” is the first track on the album, and just opens up the door to a glowing realm, and there seems to be this overarching theme of home/returning/comfort throughout the whole album…I’m a sucker for that stuff. “Take me in and dry the rain/if there’s something inside that you want to say/say it alright, it’ll be okay/i will be your light…” The crescendoing bridge in the center of the track is a fantastic instrumental, and the way the horns come in is haunting.

“Dog Got A Bone” is a great song that drops in really nicely, although it did take me a while to warm up to it when I first gave it a listen. It’s very lyrics-based, but has these awesome accordion and harmonica crinkles folded in. As opposed to choruses, the repeated sections come across more like Buddhist chants. Weirdly enough, there’s this great beatboxing moment….it’s a fucking great song.

“Inner Meet Me” is just a classic. This, to me, is a great summation of the whole album’s architecture, even though these are 3 separate EPs, they all fit together really well and this song has something to do with it.

“She’s The One” has the greatest flow and the way the song grows and evolves around a central core is atomic and powerful. It’s romantic and clever, the guitar licks unwinding fluidly to carry the lyrics to your ear, and awesome rhymes unrelentingly flowing through your mind. The layers just build to an epic apex throughout the whole song, one of my favorite structures to listen to.

“Needles In My Eyes” is a great track. Since it’s last, I sort of didn’t discover it until last year when I was having a weird time in my life. I remember walking to class with headphones on, it was a cloudy day, and it came on shuffle. I was like “Huh, never really gave this song a thought…” and it ended up catching me really off guard. The lyrics are really beautiful…

I give this album a 9.5/10. There are a few tracks that get a little jam bandy, but not to any kind of crazy detriment. If I’m stoned, “Monolith” and “The House Song” hit me a little better than if I’m not, but really I’m just trying to find one tiny thing to bitch about so I seem more objective.
